Πρόκειται για ένα θεσμό που καθιερώθηκε από το Συμβούλιο της Ευρώπης το 1991, υποστηρίζεται από την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, και έχει σκοπό να δώσει τη δυνατότητα στο ευρύ κοινό να γνωρίσει και εκτιμήσει την αρχιτεκτονική και γενικά την πολιτιστική του κληρονομιά. Στην Κύπρο, οι Ευρωπαϊκές Ημέρες Κληρονομιάς συντονίζονται από το Τμήμα Πολεοδομίας και Οικήσεως, που είναι και ο επίσημος εκπρόσωπος της Κυβέρνησης στην Επιτροπή του Συμβουλίου της Ευρώπης για την Πολιτιστική Κληρονομιά. Το Τμήμα προεδρεύει ειδικής επιτροπής (Εθνική Επιτροπή Κύπρου) που απαρτίζεται από διάφορους δημόσιους και ιδιωτικούς φορείς, η οποία συμβουλεύει και παρέχει τις απόψεις της για τη διοργάνωση των Ημερών αυτών. – Από την Εισαγωγή

It is an institution established by the Council of Europe in 1991, supported by the European Union, and aims to enable the general public to get to know and appreciate its architecture and cultural heritage in general. In Cyprus, the European Heritage Days are coordinated by the Department of Urban Planning and Housing, which is also the official representative of the Government to the Council of Europe Committee on Cultural Heritage. The Department is chaired by a special committee (National Committee of Cyprus) consisting of various public and private bodies, which advises and provides its views on the organization of these Days. - from the introduction.
