Detailed notes
    - Includes bibliographical references (pages 165-176).
    - Warehousing function in logistics has gained more importance in recent years owing to just in time philosophy becoming widespread and demand-driven organization approach with high product variety, small batch size, low quantity customer orders, short delivery lead times and requirement of quick response. Order picking operations is the most important activities in a warehouse systems. The order picking operations which are one of the most labor intensive operations used in warehouse and distribution center express the retrieval of products from storage to meet customers? demand. As for the order picking problem, it aims to determine batches of orders and find routes of the order pickers for these batches to minimize the total orderpickers? travel distance in warehouse. Order picking operation includes two main optimization problems which are known as order batching and picker routing. Order batching problem is the case of assessing the number of picking tour and determining the number of orders to be picked together in one picking tour. The routing of manual pickers is used to determine the picking sequence to retrieve items stored in warehouse. This thesis presents, an overview of order-picking methods and their potentials in solution of this problem which are analyzed for the purpose of reducing travelling distances after giving a brief overview of warehouse management and systems. Especially back to back rack systems including cross aisles were taken into consideration. Furthermore, the aisles in back to back rack system restrict the movement of the order pickers. In the scope of this study, three main different order picking strategies were evaluated: Clarke-Wright (CW) heuristic, Randomized Savings (RS) heuristic and Genetic Algorithm (GA) based metaheuristic. Additionally, in this work, novel equation series were presented to calculate distances between two picks for creating distance matrix that are used in heuristics and metaheuristic solution methods. The use of those proposed solution methods aimed to solve order batching and order picker routing problems simultaneously. CW heuristic, RS heuristic and GA based solution methods were compared to different solution parameters by using real data. The data used in this research were taken from the DHL Supply Chain Logistics? Gebze Warehouse-2 which is located in Kocaeli.
