But friends tell Monk that Mary suspected her father had been murdered because of his stubborn insistence that the Argyll Company’s current project - participation in the construction of a splendid new sewer system for the metropolis - is so badly flawed that the entire city may be in dire peril from flood and fire. Already struggling to win the respect of his men, Monk is faced with two urgent mysteries. With his intrepid wife, Hester, he is soon treading a slippery path - from luxurious drawing rooms where powerful men hatch their unscrupulous plots to a world beneath the city where poor folk fight starvation. In nightmarish tunnels, Monk and Hester find true friends, among them Scuff, a young mudlark; Sutton, the ratcatcher, and Snoot, Sutton’s clever terrier. For once, even Monk’s old enemy, Superintendent Runcorn, is on his side. But as rainfall strains the fragile manmade underground, a murderer remains free - and poised to strike again.

Es scheint unmöglich, die Wahrheit herauszufinden, aber die düstere Schönheit der Frau verfolgt ihn und drängt ihn dazu, es zu versuchen. Mary Havilland ist ihr Name und bis vor kurzem hatten sie und Toby Argyll, der blonde Mann, der ihr Schicksal teilte, geplant, zu heiraten. Auch ihr Vater, ein bei der Argyll Company angestellter Ingenieur, ist kürzlich gestorben – laut Polizei und Marys Schwester ein Selbstmord. Doch Freunde erzählen Monk, dass Mary den Verdacht hegte, ihr Vater sei ermordet worden, weil er hartnäckig darauf beharrte, dass das aktuelle Projekt der Argyll Company – die Beteiligung am Bau eines prächtigen neuen Abwassersystems für die Metropole – so schwerwiegende Mängel aufweist, dass die gesamte Stadt möglicherweise in einer Katastrophe steckt Gefahr durch Überschwemmung und Feuer. Monk kämpft bereits darum, den Respekt seiner Männer zu gewinnen, und steht vor zwei dringenden Rätseln. Mit seiner unerschrockenen Frau Hester beschreitet er bald einen schlüpfrigen Weg – von luxuriösen Salons, in denen mächtige Männer ihre skrupellosen Pläne schmieden, bis hin zu einer Welt unter der Stadt, in der arme Leute gegen den Hunger kämpfen. In albtraumhaften Tunneln finden Monk und Hester wahre Freunde, darunter Scuff, eine junge Schlammlerche; Sutton, der Rattenfänger, und Snoot, Suttons schlauer Terrier. Ausnahmsweise ist sogar Monks alter Feind, Superintendent Runcorn, auf seiner Seite. Doch während der Regen den fragilen, von Menschenhand geschaffenen Untergrund belastet, bleibt ein Mörder frei – und bereit, erneut zuzuschlagen.
