This compilation focuses on the band's early work, beginning with the Syd Barrett-fronted psychedelic pop of their first album and progressing to their more free-form, space-rock excursions. Late-'60s/early-'70s Floyd (the focus of WORKS) was a much more experimental, free-spirited endeavor than the later version. The crazed, psychedelic glory of "See Emily Play" leads seamlessly into the freaky sound collage "Several Species of Small Furry Animals..." and the Eastern-flavored mysterioso strains of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun." The band's crowning achievement, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, is well represented by "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse."
