About 1714, the Scriblerus Club was formed with Alexander Pope, John Arbuthnot, John Gay, Thomas Parnell and Swift as its best known member.This group published a collection of writings called the Memoirs of Martinus Scriblerus which were intended to satirize pedantry and "false tastes in learning."
